ATELIER PUBLIC opens tomorrow

I have been in the gallery all today with various people, including Rachel Mimiec, to get the gallery ready for the opening tomorrow. Really excited now about what will happen in the exhibition and  fantastic proposals from the people we have asked to contribute to the space are beginning to come in. There are lots of photos on Glasgow Museums’ Flickr site and some in this post from the installation and work today.

Below is the text going in the gallery

ATELIER PUBLIC

10 November 2011–15 January 2012

ATELIER PUBLIC is an exhibition that takes the form of a working artists’ studio. We’re interested in what happens in this space, and we invite you to make artworks that become part of the installation. This is a space for looking, thinking, touching, exploring and making.

It has a curator, a person who manages the space. They have also asked some artists, thinkers and makers with a particular interest in play, creativity and the imagination to come and engage with the space during the exhibition. These mini residencies will help to shape the space and record what happens.

Through ATELIER PUBLIC we aim to witness, document and share the work created and installed in the space, online as well as here in the gallery.

ATELIER PUBLIC will be closed on Mondays to give the curator time to reflect and record the exhibition.

Why make an exhibition like ATELIER PUBLIC?

We’re interested in the questions, ‘What is art, and who is it for?’ ATELIER PUBLIC is part of GoMA’s ongoing collaboration with artists, partners and visitors to explore the many answers to these questions.

Questions we’re exploring in ATELIER PUBLIC include:

Do we – visitors, curators, artists and educators – have a shared understanding of what art is and who it’s for?

When art is created, how is it appreciated, valued and shared?

Is the gallery a site of reception – a place where work is shown or looked at – or is it a site of production?

Authorship – who is the artist, who is the maker and what is the work?

GoMA would like to thank the following contributors to ATELIER PUBLIC:

Theresa Casey, Andrew Dawson, Fiona Dean, Anne Elliot, Patsy Ford, Johnny Gailey, Rosie Gibson, Jim Hamlyn, David Harding, Kirsteen MacDonald, Peter McCaughey, Maria McCavana, James McLardy, Maureen Michael, Rachel Mimiec, Nicolas Party, David Sherry, Iseult Timmermans & Framework participants
